Flow Communications

The Flow design studio is proud of the high-level, well-thought-through, creative work it produces for Flow clients. The team is experienced and equipped with the latest design software to enable it to meet clients’ changing creative needs.

A week in the design studio might see projects range from brand creation to visual identity design, print design for brochures, creating posters or working on below-the-line campaigns.

“We also design websites and interactive solutions, advanced UX, apps and animation, and do video editing,” says design head Thuso Khoeli.

The designers love the challenge of producing fresh, inspirational work about which they can be proud. Following much debate about which designs they prefer, the team members have shared a few of their recent favourites.

“They’re not numbered because it’s not a ‘best-to-worst’ selection. It’s more of a cool mix of graphic, web, branding and other creative solutions,” says Thuso.

Flight Centre – Yellow Label Holidays catalogue

This catalogue is based on the concept that travel is an adventure. Paging through it is meant to represent taking that journey. Travel means different things to different people, whether you’re a individual, a couple or a group of friends. The design approach was to create an “Instagram” feel to the product – a collection of moments captured by friends. This mix has resulted in a catalogue that is appealing and fun.

Reach Commodities

This is a newly formed commodity broking company that executes orders to buy or sell commodity contracts on behalf of clients, and charges them a commission.

Flow was briefed to produce a corporate identity that communicates this nature of business. The concept of this logo design is focused on the horizon (land and sea), over which all trade goods are imported and exported.

The typography is used in such a way that it creates an illusion of the horizon. The “A” in REACH is manipulated to create an arrow, which creates the idea of moving in a specific direction.

Strategic Growth Initiative

The usage of a hexagon in design conveys a contemporary feel, with strong lines and a shape that echoes the strategic and dynamic sense of the business. Simple, geometric shapes create subtle patterns and guidelines for the eyes to follow.

Cradle of Humankind

Briefed on the Cradle’s new, responsive website (it is accessible on all devices), this design had to be clean and needed to reflect the Cradle branding.

Bold imagery was used to draw in the crowd and the diversity of the Cradle area was highlighted, along with what it has to offer as a destination. A mega menu makes provision for future additions to the site, while other new elements include a description pane and a marketing image slot.

National Home Security Month

The priority for the new National Home Security Month (NHSM) website was that it needs to be responsive. The design had to be clean and showcase the NHSM branding. The designers were required to make social media prominent and easily accessible to the audience.

The mix was to be image-heavy rather than text-heavy, to attract potential clients and highlight the security services available. The client also wanted to highlight the importance of its lead partners. The end result is a website that is easy to navigate and one that appeals across all age groups.

The Gates Foundation – Africa brochure

The big idea around the brochure is to focus on the missions that the Gates Foundation runs throughout Africa. The copy is written in such a way as to be concise and to the point, complemented by an infographic-style layout. This helps guide the reader through the facts and highlights crucial areas on which the Foundation focuses. In juxtaposition to the copy, big images are used to focus on the human element and remind the user what the Foundation is all about. Short snippets of true-life stories give the brochure a human face, and urge the user to get involved on a personal level.
