I was standing in the queue at the Clicks Pharmacy in Balfour Park shopping centre a few days ago, when I noticed a young girl who looked very familiar. I couldn’t, for the life of me, figure out where I knew her from: she wasn’t a distant family member, a neighbour or a friend’s sibling.

Then it hit me – I recognised her from the St Mary’s annual school magazine. Having worked on the magazine for two consecutive years now, I feel as though I could recognise most of those girls blindfolded!

Trying to cram a whole year’s worth of St Mary’s events into a chunky, 155-page magazine is not child’s play, I can tell you that. But it’s really fun. Every now and then, my mind would drift back to my own school days.

The spreads I most enjoyed laying out were the sport pages, art, junior school creative writing, senior school production, junior school nativity play and the opening of the school’s arts centre, The Edge – as well as the matric dance pages, of course. The pictures are absolutely stunning and the girls just bring them to life.

This year’s magazine was surprisingly simple. My partner in crime, project manager Roshni Nana, and I spent about two months working on this beauty and hardly worked overtime at all! The marketing team at St Mary’s was a great help – this wouldn’t have been so easy if it weren’t for the team’s organisation.

Once again, we’ve managed to produce a stunning magazine that, I trust, the girls will keep for years to come to remind them of some of the greatest times of their lives.
