To date Flow has provided media training to more than 1 000 individuals representing more than 100 organisations, including a growing number outside of South Africa.
Media training is a mix of theory and practice, put to the test in highly realistic situations that are filmed and played back to delegates as part of their training.
“There is a growing sense that good media relationships are increasingly important to every organisation,” says Flow CEO Tara Turkington.
“Media training has become more popular than ever in South Africa, with Flow conducting weekly training sessions at our in-house training facility in Rosebank, as well as in Port Elizabeth, Durban and Cape Town.
“What’s even more encouraging is the call for media training outside of South Africa. We have trained in Uganda and more recently in Botswana and Lesotho, while new clients have booked training in Zambia in the new year. Flow has also trained many high-profile media spokespersons and CEOs from Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria, Swaziland and Rwanda.”
Flow’s media training coordinator, Maria Foundanellas, says the majority of training requests come via client referrals or via the Flow website.
“With 10 years in media training and a facilitation team of industry professionals who share 60 years’ experience in the media and broadcast fields, Flow is in a position to offer a unique and comprehensive training experience,” says Maria.
Flow works with a formidable team of professional broadcasters and journalists to offer customised media training. The team includes well-known media personalities David O’Sullivan, Camilla Bath, Jenny Crwys Williams, Jeremy Maggs and Kate Turkington.
Says Kate, “Media training is crucial in our rolling news environment. At Flow, it’s incredibly exciting and rewarding to work with companies, institutions, government departments, foreign embassies and celebrities (once a famous sports team), and to see how people grow and gain their confidence with print journalists, in radio and in managing television interviews.
“It’s also exhilarating to travel outside our own borders and meet the media training needs of clients in other countries. And the core message is always the same – know what you’re doing and who you’re dealing with.”
Drawing on the skills and expertise of its team, Flow currently provides various media training options:
- Media training for print, online, radio and television
- Immersion training: print, online, radio, television, door-stepping and press conferences
- Crisis-scenario training
Our training package includes “live” filmed scenarios and practical feedback sessions with professional broadcasters.
“Flow’s media training is continually evolving and diversifying as we customise our programme to suit clients’ specific needs,” says Tara.
Here’s what a few of our clients enjoyed most about their media training experience:
“Getting tips from the best in the industry, but more importantly I feel we got valuable feedback on how we conduct ourselves in presentations and industry interactions.” – Katinka Pretorius, MD of Lowe and Partners
“The real-life example of crisis management made me reflect on the best way to get the message across, even in difficult circumstances.” – Joana Costa Bento, junior public financial manager, Eskom
“Learning the theory and then putting it into practice! Overall you covered much more than I expected.” – Gari Matarirano, senior counsel, Macfarlanes
In addition to media training, Flow offers:
