I can’t believe that this time last year I had just started working at Flow Communications as an intern. I was so excited – I could not wait to learn more about public relations (PR).
Damelin requires its students to perform 104 hours (approximately 13 workdays) of in-service training at a company in the PR industry before they can graduate. Luckily for me, a lecturer took an interest in me and sent my CV to Caroline Smith, now head of PR at Flow. Caroline accepted me as an intern and I got to complete my hours at Flow.
I soon learned the difference between the working environment and what is expected of me at work, and being at school. On the first day I was already hands-on, doing research for one of our clients, Nando’s SA.
I like to believe that it was because of my hard work and dedication that, during my internship, Flow offered me a three-month employment contract until December 2013. I was so happy and thrilled.
In the hectic, busy PR environment, three months passed incredibly quickly. Luckily, before the contract expired, Flow renewed it for a further year.
I still feel blessed and grateful that Caroline saw my potential. And, as you can tell (because I’m writing this blog), I continue with the company to this day.
In July 2014, Caroline told me that the company was offering me a permanent position as a junior account executive. I immediately said yes.
My duties include media relations, client liaison and administration. It’s been a good year of learning to be more responsible and taking on the challenges of being a PR executive. I love every minute of it – from working on clients' accounts to enjoying our lunch club.
I will continue doing my best and growing with the company, and I will always appreciate the opportunity to be part of the Flow family.
