The monthly Flow staff meeting ended on a lively note on Friday 28 February as the various Flow departments went toe-to-toe (well, not literally, of course) to claim the title, “The Brain of Flow”.
This involved exacting competition and much flexing of the grey matter as representatives of the departments were put through testing rounds of general knowledge questions.
And when the dust settled, bragging rights belonged to the writing studio.
Flowstars got a taste of what they were in for when, a few days before the meeting, they received an email containing the following:
“Each studio will nominate ONE representative who will participate, on behalf of that team, in The Brain of Flow competition. Start your selection process now – it needs to be your cleverest, or the coolest, or the one who works the best under pressure, the calmest, the silliest or the most FUN person in your team. Representatives will go up against one another for one team to claim the prize of The Brain of Flow.”
The team representatives were told to “know your Flow stuff, some general knowledge and be quick”.
The champions put forward by their respective departments were: Ryan Levenson for the design studio; Richard Frank for the development studio; Willem Steenkamp for the writing studio; Bev Strimer for the admin team; Gianluca Tucci for the project managers; and Caroline Smith for PR.
After an initial round of questions that saw some of the teams end on the same score, four Flowstars – Caroline, Willem, Richard and Bev – faced off against each other in a tense (well, maybe just a bit?) sudden-death round.
An unruffled Willem emerged victorious, claiming the highly sought-after title for a very proud and vocal writing studio.
Said Willem after the win: “I love general knowledge – I am a repository of utterly useless info – and I have a competitive nature, so the Brain of Flow was right up my alley. Flow’s full of bright people, so this was never going to be a cakewalk.
“The best part about winning? Not losing. The worst part? I’m on a special diet and not allowed to touch ANYTHING in the winner’s hamper – so the fab Flow writing studio, that so cunningly volunteered me to represent them in the Brain of Flow, are the big winners!”
Fellow writing studio member Melanie Feris never doubted the outcome of the competition, displaying admirable faith in Willem’s talents: “We knew he could do it; he’s the best person to bring the prize home.”
