No matter where you go or who you meet, it seems there’s always a new word waiting to be discovered. The mot du jour at Flow is “phlebotomist”, which essentially means “a person who collects blood”. Almost like a vampire.
We stumbled upon this word while chatting to the members of the South African National Blood Service (SANBS), who sent a mobile unit to Flow’s Joburg office today to collect blood from Flowstars, clients and friends.
For phlebotomists Puleng Lurayi and Karabo Sekati, working for SANBS is very rewarding.
“We get to save lives,” says Karabo. “And meet some wonderful people,” adds Puleng.
The team is based at Auckland Park, in the vicinity of the SABC, which means that they often get to draw celebrity blood.
“Yes, we have met some famous people,” says Puleng, “although we obviously can’t say who, because that would be unethical.”
“But we enjoy working everywhere,” says Karabo. “It’s great meeting new people and being in a different environment every day.”
And will these phlebotomists be going to see the recently released Twilight movie this weekend?
There was a bit of debate in the SANBS team when the question was asked, but the response seemed a little lukewarm. Probably something about taking your work home with you ...
