The Media Monitoring Africa initiative We, The People, is a campaign that aims to educate South Africans about the role the country’s Constitution plays in their everyday lives and why it is so important. According to the We, The People website, “The campaign is a way to get South Africans to actually read the Constitution and, better yet, to understand what it means for us”.

The We, The People initiative founders’ hope is to see a South Africa with informed citizens who understand their rights, ensure that their rights are exercised, and hold those in power to account.

By integrating with mobile capabilities and social networking sites Twitter and Facebook, the website and campaign are able to track the number of ”voices” sharing how much they love our Constitution, and why our Constitution is considered to be one of the most advanced – if not the best – in the world.

We, The People, set a target of one million responses to commemorate our Constitution and its 15th birthday in February 2012.

After many years spent collaborating with Media Monitoring Africa, Flow Communications’ Tiffany Turkington says Flow is “proud to partner with and support another outstanding initiative that celebrates South Africa and our Constitution.” Like the growing number of voices, Tara Turkington agrees. “We should care about our Constitution and we should celebrate it,” she says.

In this vein, the We, The People campaign has provided all South Africans with a platform to share with the world what we know and love about our Constitution – because if people don’t understand something, they won’t care about it, and if they don’t care about it, they won’t fight for it.
