This new work, by seasoned award choreographer Luyanda Sidiya, opens at the Soweto Theatre on 29 May 2013 and will run until 8 June 2013.

Dominion is a revolutionary theatrical experience that aims to express the levels of power that individuals possess, how this power is unleashed and how it can have a positive or negative impact on our society, be it in a social or political space.

“With this production we are looking at stimulating discussions and evoking debate about our role that we portray in making our environment and country a better one; we are looking at the power that is within all of us, and how it is utilised to affect our environment,” says Sidiya.

Dominion is part of a double bill that also features Sidiya’s previous work, Umnikelo, which premiered in 2011 at the annual Vuyani Week Season, which will be touring Finland during June.

Vuyani Dance Theatre’s founder and artistic director, the award-winning Gregory Maqoma, says: “Vuyani Dance Theatre has been involved in so many dance productions, but this is a one-of-a-kind. Working on this production has been nothing but great fun, and I really believe the final product caters for all.”

At the launch, the company also announced the programme for its upcoming season and unveiled plans to relocate to a studio in Soweto.

“The VDT’s bold move to Soweto unleashes the legacy of my forefathers and those I grew up admiring, like the late Jacky Semela, a master African contemporary teacher and scholar who worked in Soweto and around the continent, developing dance and dancers,” said Maqoma.
