Are your tweets lacking verve? Are you struggling to accumulate followers? Not entirely sure what Twitter can really do for you? Here are five “twips” to help you tweet like a pro!
Customise your Twitter profile. Give your Twitter profile character with an interesting new background, a current photo of yourself and a quirky bio. There are a variety of websites dedicated to helping you spruce up your Twitter profile, such as Themeleon which allows you to customise a fun and colourful background wallpaper. People are less likely to think you’re a savvy tweeter (and worth following) if your profile photo remains the default Twitter egg image – choose a clear, easily recognisable photo of yourself so that people are able to put a face to the tweets!
Start conversations. Use the “@mention” function to include people in your tweets. Involving your followers will encourage them to retweet your tweets, as well as make you more interesting.
Share photos. Some people respond better to visual information. If you’re able to, share photos of your experiences as well as simply tweeting about them. Keep your photos decent and always tweet them with younger users in mind.
Use the search tool. Interested in a particular topic or news update? Don’t wait for interesting tweets to find you – search for them! Tag key words in your tweets using the # function (ie place a # in front of a word to highlight it for search optimisation) and give your tweet value in the “Twitterverse”.
Choose who to follow carefully. Although some may say it is poor “Twitterquette” not to follow someone who has just chosen to follow you, make sure you check out someone’s profile before hitting that green “Follow” button. Some Twitter accounts are created to promote unsavoury content, or for spam purposes. When searching for your favourite celebrities to follow, only follow Twitter-verified users (look for the small blue seal of approval next to the user’s name).
