Flow Communications

Flow has produced two annual school magazines and a school community news publication that chronicle the academic, sporting and cultural life of three top Johannesburg schools: St John’s College in Houghton, Dominican Convent School (DCS) in Belgravia and St Mary’s School in Waverley.

For close to a decade, Flow has been responsible for the content production, editing, layout and design of the St Mary’s annual magazine.

The 2016 magazine features a number of full-page images, while a fresh class photograph format offers pictures of each girl individually, rather than the full class.

The St Mary’s magazine also broke into eco-friendly territory as it was printed on matt paper sourced from responsibly managed forests.

“Once again Flow Communications pulled out all the stops,” says Kathy Mittendorf, head of marketing, St Mary's. “The new-style magazine is everything we hoped for and more. Thank you to the team who worked so effortlessly to produce the 2016 St Mary’s school magazine. We are looking forward to working again with Flow on the 2017 magazine.”

“The project ran smoothly with no problems at any stage. It’s always a pleasure to work with Kathy Mittendorf and Margie Fussell from St Mary’s as all the content and images are delivered on time, which enables us to meet our deadlines,” says Flow project manager Ros Caboz.

The Dominican Convent School magazine was more of a collaborative effort, with the client taking responsibility for the design and layout, and Flow handling content editing and printing.

This year’s magazine for Dominican was a full-colour, A4 product of 116 pages. The design incorporated beautiful photographic imagery of learners at the school, which gave it a really personal touch.

Dominican's Paul Horn says, “Working with Flow is always a smooth and seamless process and we really appreciate their expertise in editing and production. Our magazine always looks the best it can possibly be and it’s always done on time.”

The December 2016 VITA community news publication produced for St John’s was the second Flow has worked on for the school and the final product had a high-end magazine look as opposed to a school brochure, which is what our client was after.

To achieve this look, larger headings and a more limited palette were used to create a clean and simple design that made use of quality imagery as a focal point.

Despite an intense deadline, the magazine was delivered on time. “I want to thank you all from the bottom of my heart for the Herculean effort. I am truly grateful,” says St John's communications officer, Devlin Brown.

Although Flow delivered timeously, the print deadline was subsequently extended to 2017 to make allowance for the inclusion of St John’s 2016 matric results, released at the end of December 2016.
