Flow is all about its people. This year, the company, which recently turned six, introduced a new formal study policy that encourages employees to improve their professional qualifications. This new policy has been greatly welcomed by those doing further learning.
CEO of Flow Communications Tara Turkington says, “We are extremely proud of all our staff, who are very experienced and well qualified. We have more than 300 years of collective experience.
“We really encourage people to study further and improve their qualifications all the time because we then offer better services to all our clients. Furthermore, we try give our staff some time off, such as half days, encouraging them to incorporate their studies into their work and generally bringing their knowledge to Flow.”
Colin Ford, Flow’s writing studio manager who is currently studying through Wits, says, “I think it’s important for a company to give its employees the opportunity to study because it adds considerably to their skill pool, which means the company is able to offer a more well-rounded service to its clients. It’s been great to take time off for my studies and I don’t have to take annual leave. It’s always a bit of a stress for people who need to dip into their leave to help them study, because that would be a difficult choice.”
Zintle Mtyeku, junior project manager, is studying her BBA in marketing management through Institue of Marketing Management Graduate School of Marketing. “I decided to add to my IMM diploma as not only will it be beneficial to me, but it will also benefit Flow, which is always trying to find innovative solutions for clients’ needs by pushing the envelope and customising its solutions. With the new study policy, it’s great to know that the company you work for supports and encourages your personal development.”
Writer Mildred Thabane, who is studying business management through Unisa, adds: “The new study policy is really great. One of the things you quickly learn while studying part-time is time management – which is really tricky with work commitments and deadlines. Some of my tips for a successful work and study career are: manage your time; always start studying early; and, most importantly, study something you enjoy so you can be passionate and committed.”
