Flow’s Johannesburg office was covered in purple awesomeness on Friday 16 March. The air was thick with anticipation and nerves as Flow’s contingent of agile Daredevils readied themselves for Hollard’s annual Daredevil Run, around the picturesque Zoo Lake and surrounding suburbs.
The run, an institution on the annual running calendar, started off as a dare nearly a decade ago when a brave young man was dared to run through peak-hour traffic wearing nothing but a Speedo.
The main aim of the run nowadays is to raise awareness about testicular and prostate cancer, the two cancers that affect men the most.
With much grunting, a little groaning and the odd shot of tequila, the Flow team managed to squeeze themselves into their tight purple Speedos and raced off to the starting point. They were met with a sea of purple, dressed up as muscle machines, fairies, clowns and Vikings.
First over the finishing line for Flow was Fabio de Abreu, in a record time. Richard Frank rushed through without a drop of perspiration, looking as fresh as a purple daisy. Next through was Sam Thiel, the youngest member of the team (his mom, Tara, is our CEO), with Roy Barford hot on his heels.
In all the ensuing madness, Mxolisi Gumbi, Chaddean Soo and Tinashe Gunda crossed the finishing line. We waited patiently for our Qiniso Makopo and Kevin Morudu (from Team Mango), who casually strolled over the winning line and then dashed off to the beer tent. We never saw them again!
“I discovered places where I never thought I had muscles,” said a rueful Qiniso on Monday morning, when he slowly and very carefully got out of his car.
