Flow was privileged recently to host a group of girls from the Dominican Convent School as part of the “Take a Girl Child to Work Day” initiative.
The day is a corporate social investment event organised by cellular service provider Cell C. It aims to “deepen the thinking of the girl child with regard to their infinite roles in society, enhance her self-esteem, inspire and motivate her to reach her full potential, and through exposure to diverse careers and positive role models, assist her to prepare for the world of work”.
The girls described their day with us as “insightful” and “helpful”.
Project manager and tour guide for the day Lethabo-Thabo Royds took the girls around the Flow offices, helping them to chat to and interact with Flowstars in the various departments.
Grade 11 learner Londy Mbatha says she learned a huge deal about the ins and outs of public relations, graphic design, blog writing and project management.
“Our guide was very welcoming and friendly, and helped me to realise it’s possible to succeed, regardless of my gender. At Flow I learned that if I am passionate about what I do, I will certainly make it,” she says.
Matriculant Nokuthoba Ndebele describes the experience as nothing short of awesome. Her highlights included the warmth displayed by Flowstars and learning about what each department does.
“The staff at Flow inspired me to take more interest in my future career. I had a good time listening to each department sharing its knowledge, and briefing more about their daily lives and work,” she says.
Flow designer Nomthandazo Peyise spent 30 minutes with the girls, showcasing some of the design team’s work and chatting about what their daily diaries look like.
“I showed them a bunch of stuff we do and explained what a graphic designer’s job entails. The girls were fun and attentive,” says Noms.
