The Catholic Institute of Education’s (CIE) quarterly, Catholic Education, poses a production challenge to Flow’s writing and design studios in that we often have short lead times in which to sub-edit and design the booklet.

It was with this in mind that Flow staff members Aneshree Naidoo and Ingrid Sinclair tackled an article each for the magazine.
The magazine examines the state of and promotes debate on Catholic schools and education across Southern Africa, as well as around Catholicism more broadly. Articles in the latest edition include one on the Manchester United Soccer Schools initiative, which aims to instil values through sportsmanship, while another reports on a visit to Zimbabwean Catholic schools by members of the CIE and its partner organisations.
Catholic schools in Southern Africa follow in the long-standing tradition of Catholic schools across the world, striving to provide quality education in circumstances that are sometimes trying. These schools often lead the field in inclusive education, educating children across racial and religious boundaries. In the case of St Vincent School for the Deaf in Johannesburg, this inclusiveness extends to providing quality education for hearing-challenged children and being the first school of its kind to employ a deaf principal, Ingrid Parkin, profiled in a recent issue of Catholic Education.
Along with some writing and sub-editing the magazine content, Flow also designs and prints the magazine.
Flow graphic designer, Neo Male, who worked on redesigning the magazine last year, says: “Compared with the old design we tried to make it more colourful, more friendly and fun and easy to read. We gave it a complete makeover, including a new masthead. We’ve also included two new features that appear in every issue: ‘Snippets’ and book reviews.”
Flow has been working with the institute for about two years. CEO Tara Turkington says: “We really enjoy working with the Catholic Institute of Education and applaud the work they are doing to uplift teachers and learners, especially in the poor, rural areas of Southern Africa. We have produced many editions of Catholic Education with the CIE and are looking forward to working with them on their new website, which we are aiming to launch in early August.”
The CIE is one of Flow’s many clients in the education sector. We also work with the University of the Witswatersrand, Dominican Convent School, St Mary’s School in Waverley, the University of Cape Town and TEACH South Africa, among others.
