The headline doesn’t only describe Shaun Demmer, who is indeed the perfect post graduate for Flow Public Relations, but it was also his subject line when he sent an email to Flow PR asking about potential employment.
Shaun matriculated in Phalaborwa (Limpopo) at the Kingfisher Private School (he was the only learner in matric in the whole school). “I’d finished my syllabus by June,” says Shaun with a smile. “I really missed my two imaginary friends, though.”
After matric, Shaun enrolled at the University of Pretoria where he graduated with a BCom Hons in Communication Management in November this year (having dabbled in visual arts and law along the way).
During this period, Shaun’s parents moved to a small island off the coast of Indonesia, leaving him behind to take care of the family home.
“This taught me to grow up fast and take responsibility,” he says.
Shaun loves travelling. His most recent trip overseas, prior to starting with Flow PR, was a whistle stop tour of Indonesia, Singapore and Vietnam.
Flow first caught Shaun’s eye while he was working on his thesis for his honours degree. He’d followed Flow Communications on Twitter and soon realised that this was the kind of company he would like to join, which is how he came to fire off that email to Flow PR.
“I didn’t just want to be another intern at any big company without a chance to grow,” he explains. “After sending an email at 11pm and getting a reply the following morning from Shoni Makhari (the CEO of Flow PR) telling me how he enjoyed reading my email, I was very happy.”
But the only problem was that Flow PR had no vacancies at the time. Fortunately, a gap opened up and a fortnight later Shaun got a follow-up email from Shoni asking if he could demonstrate his writing skills. And then the all important question to follow was: “How soon can you start?”
Today Shaun is a writer and Account Executive at Flow PR.
