Flow Communications has recently completed the design of a poster for children on how news is reported for one of its longest-standing clients, the Media Monitoring Project (MMP).
The MMP is a non-governmental organisation that focuses on human rights, and particularly the role of the media in South Africa and the rest of the continent.
Flow graphic designer Lorraine Gumede says the poster is for classrooms. “It’s aimed at teaching children about how news gets into a newspaper, from the day information is gathered by a journalist until the paper goes to print.” The pictures on the poster were drawn by Bronwyn Amm.
MMP director William Bird explains: “Bronwyn had worked on our children’s project in 2003 and I asked her as a very large favour to please draw up a child-friendly and childlike version of one of the key resources we use in our children’s project. This she did for us very kindly.
“All the pictures were informed by the work we have done with children. We use the pictures, and soon the poster, in an exercise where we teach children about how news is about choice. We place stickers on each area where a choice is made in relation to the news story. This we find is valuable in building critical media literacyskills.”
