Working in broadcast journalism for 12 years hasn’t made Thrishni Subramoney want out. Instead, she is looking to explore more and do more.
She now joins Flow Communication as a senior online writer/media developer.
“News is not about print or radio any more. It’s become a more convergent space. I’m excited about the prospect of travel, and also about the exciting things Flow does with technology. It’s cutting-edge … telling stories with technology in the 21st century,” she says.
Thrishni’s 12 years’ experience comes via the SABC and East Coast Radio. She has lived in Durban most of her life, besides a year’s stint in Johannesburg in 2005. This time she promises to make her Joburg move last longer.
“It was definitely time for a change. This thing has come as a calling. Tara (Turkington, Flow’s CEO) was actually my first journalism lecturer and we have kept in touch since. She’s been telling me about Flow and the things you do, and I thought it’s time,” she says.
Says writing studio manager Melanie Feris: “Thrishni brings a wealth of new skills and experience to the writing studio. We’re eager to see how she copes with the crazy-creative-hardworking-fun-loving-always-up-for-a-challenge team that is the writing studio.”
She wears a necklace with an engagement ring safely tucked in.
“It was a Lord of the Rings engagement. My fiancé, Poovashen Pillay, bought a replica of the “ring of power” online and proposed in February. We’re geeky like that,” she laughs.
Poovashen is a software tester who is currently in Ireland for work, but plans to join Thrishni eventually.
“He’s awesome and has fantastic taste in pop culture,” Thrishni says.
Thrishni is currently reading Oscar: An Accident Waiting to Happen, by Melinda Ferguson and Patricia Taylor. She also enjoys reading fantasy and autobiographies.
The writing studio’s Willem Steenkamp welcomes Thrishni to the team: “It’s great to have Thrishni join the writing team. Her experience in radio, particularly, is something that will even further broaden the writing studio’s ability to tackle any kind of communications assignment. I look forward to working with her.”
