Flow Communications

Over the past eight months I have become a member of the Flow Communications PR team, which has proved to be quite a learning curve. I enjoy being an intern because every day presents me with a fresh puzzle to be solved.

When briefed with a task, I go through a range of emotions in the space of 30 seconds, from being curious and eager, to second-guessing myself at times.

The advice that has stuck with me during my time at Flow comes from Nontobeko Mtshali, a writer in the content studio, who told me: “Learning something new is a journey; it is not easy, it is a challenge you need to prepare yourself for mentally and emotionally.”

I love that I have been exposed to the real working environment while in my final year of study for a qualification in PR and communications management.

Meeting journalists, researching potential influencers, and organising and attending events, are aspects of my job that I enjoy the most. What's captivated me during my time in public relations is my newly acquired working knowledge of how the media and communications industry functions and where PR fits into the picture.

Being exposed to major clients, attending meetings and contributing to brainstorming sessions has been inspirational and has increased my confidence. I enjoy the creative thought processes involved and the dynamic people I work with. Many Flowstars have formed an integral part of what I see as just the beginning of my career in communications.

It is always rewarding to be a part of a project from the beginning and to see it come to life. I’ve seen first-hand the role of PR in the marketing value chain.

I’m grateful for the opportunity to have been able to complete my module at Flow. I have learned, and am still learning, more about public relations and communications. There is a never a dull day in this industry, and more especially at Flow Communications.
