All work and no play makes for very dull writers – and dullness is something that is not tolerated at Flow. And so, in a pre-emptive strike against dullness, the Flow writing team went adventuring.
On Wednesday May 30, we left the office early and headed off to Brightwater Commons to test our skills at Adventure Golf. Owing to a variety of directions and routes being bandied around the studio, and some creative interpretations of these directions, we arrived at the venue in stages. But eventually we congregated on the balcony of the Adventure Golf course, and, after liquid courage for some (which unfortunately doesn’t equal skill), began our miniature-golf mission.
The adventure got off to a slow start as debate raged over the composition of teams, which course(s) would be played and how exactly the scoring worked. But this soon gave way to fierce competition during which we crossed bridges and rocks; knocked our golf balls up hills and down, round corners, through tunnels and into the rough; and laughed, shouted in jubilation and cried out in frustration.
At last, half an hour later than expected, we regrouped on the Adventure Golf balcony and attempted to work out our scores – which was adequate proof that we are better with words than numbers. After much number-crunching and second-guessing, Colin, Julia and Bianca were declared the victors.
And then it was off to our post-Adventure Golf victuals at Babylon Again. After our prolonged golfing endeavours, we would have been grateful for any food. But Babylon Again served food fit for Flowstars. Some tried traditional Greek food, like yiro, while others, having had enough adventure for one evening, had steak. The supper was enjoyed by all, golfing boasts and embarrassments were shared, and conversation flowed until late in the evening. Our adventure ended on a chivalrous note when writing studio manager Colin Ford bought all the ladies at the table a rose.
