Linda Piegl joined Flow in February, adding her sub-editing skills to the Jo’burg writing studio. She says she had come across Flow’s name some time ago, and she couldn’t believe her luck when she got an interview a few months later.
Linda holds a degree in journalism from Rhodes University, and still considers herself a loyal “Rhodent”. She has worked in the hotel industry, PR and communications, as well as as a freelancer, writing and sub-editing for various clients and publications. Some of her previous employers included: Farmer’s Weekly (where she gained “new respect” for farmers), Heat (where she kept up to date with the latest fashion) and True Love, East Africa (where she learnt how our neighbours live).
Linda’s unusual surname, Piegl, is of Hungarian descent (with a possible hint of German), and she went to that side of the world for a few years to get a glimpse of her European origins. “I travelled all over and also lived in Austria and Switzerland,” she says.
Her passion has always been for words and language. When editing people’s work, there are a few things that get to her more than others. “When people use apostrophes in ways they shouldn’t be used!” she says. “And above all, bad sentence structure; when you can’t work out the meaning of the sentence.”
