When the Flow running club started about six weeks ago with training on Monday and Wednesday afternoons, there weren’t many of us who really thought we would soon be tackling a 5km or even a 10km race.
And nobody would have believed Richard would be donning a skirt.
But on Sunday 13 October, 10 Flowstars and a load of Flow friends finished the 2013 Spar Ladies’ Race in good spirits, along with thousands of other “ladies”, some of them with very hairy legs and balding.
The race went right by our Johannesburg offices on Oxford Road, past Rosebank, and through the leafy suburbs of Killarney and Melrose.
Ace project manager Ros Caboz showed her organisational skills yet again by getting us all to the start (and finish) line, properly trained and prepared.
Asked how it went, she said, “I thought it was very well organised and a lovely race. We’re going to tackle another 10km round the Johannesburg Zoo in two weeks’ time.
“Please don’t forget your running stuff on Monday!”
Said Thabs Royds, who brought a combi-load of friends and family to do the race: “Woooooohoooo! We did it!” She was unable to offer more due to breathing issues at the time of going to press.
Said Khanyi Shabalala, who completed the 5km like it was a walk in the James and Ethel Grey Park, one of our favourite training grounds: “Next time, I’m doing the 10!”
Thanks to the organisers for a great race. Flow will definitely be back next year, hopefully with an even larger contingent.
* Friends of Flowstars are welcome to join us on Monday and Wednesday evenings, at 5.15pm. There are several walking and running routes, to suit everyone from beginners to the very fit.
