This week marks the 30th anniversary of Black Wednesday, a day in which South Africa’s media freedom was severely curtailed.
On October 19, 1977, The World and the Weekend World newspapers were banned, their editor Percy Qoboza and deputy editor Aggrey Klaaste were detained and 17 anti-apartheid organisations were banned.
Since then, the political landscape in which journalists operate inSouth Africa has improved significantly. However, media freedom is something which journalists and citizens alike must fight for on a daily basis.
Flow applauds the courage of the journalists who risked so much during the apartheid era - as well as those working fearlessly to report stories for the good of our people. Without them, our democracy would be a hollow shell.
