As 2009 draws to a close, Flow Communications has a number of great projects to look back on.
Among these are the two annual magazines the company recently compiled for long-standing clients Dominican Convent School (DCS) and St Mary’s School.
The magazines showcase the schools’ activities and accomplishments for the past year.
Flow’s graphic designers have worked tirelessly on the magazines, spending late nights and sometimes working through lunch – and the results speak for themselves!
Graphic designer Lorraine Gumede worked on the DCS magazine. Though it was hard work and required a few long nights, Lorraine says she realised it was all worth it when she saw the end result.
“I really enjoyed working on the matric dance pages because I got to see all the girls in their beautiful outfits looking very happy,” says Lorraine.
“My favourite, however, were the creative art and painting pages by the entire school – they blew me away, [the work] was really beautiful to see.”
Ernesto Joseph, who designed the cover of the magazine, says the fresh brand that Flow introduced to DCS this year influenced his design.
“We have introduced some dynamic, curved shapes to all of the marketing material. The idea behind this was to suggest the energy and liveliness of the school and its students,” says Ernesto.
“Bringing this into the magazine and onto the cover allows the identity of the school to become more distinct and memorable, [and it] reflects the school spirit. This year’s cover also feels a little more contemporary, while still remaining distinctly Dominican.”
Neo Male, who worked on the layout and design of the St Mary’s magazine, says the design was an interpretation of the different themes that each grade came up with: “Some of the themes comprised rainforests, pirates of St Mary’s and much more.”
