We may be pros at writing, design, web development and training, just don’t ask us to win any golf tournaments. On 31 August, Flow joined the South African Breweries (SAB) World of Beer’s annual golf day, which was held this year in support of a great new conservation initiative called Our Rhinos in Safe Hands.
The project, championed by cricket legend Mark Boucher in partnership with SAB, aims to raise enough money to register South Africa’s 18 000 rhinos on the DNA database. The DNA system will not only manage the rhino population, but will also assist in prosecuting offenders by linking the crime scene to the recovered horn.
Flow jumped at the chance to support this fantastic project, which is significant to us for two main reasons. Firstly, SAB World of Beer is a very valuable client and we were keen to support them in this initiative. Secondly, Flow has a strong affinity for causes that promote the welfare of rhinos. One of our pro bono projects is, in fact, handling the social networking for a project called I love Rhinos, which aims to raise awareness of the plight of these endangered animals.
After dusting off some golfing cobwebs, journalist and media developer Stuart Dickinson, designer Ryan Levenson, programmer Darren Caboz and Collective Cow’s Patrick Gurney headed to Houghton Golf Club to represent Flow on the fairways. And in the rough. And the bunkers.
“Even though I played about 40 of my 100 strokes from a bunker, I had great fun. I earned the worthy title of ‘Sand King’,” says Stuart.
The team forged ahead through 18 holes and emerged slightly sunburnt and fatigued as the sun began to set. Then it was off to the clubhouse for dinner and the charity auction. At the end of the evening, more than R30 000 had been raised for the project in the auction alone.
“Big thanks to the World of Beer for having us on board, and we wish the SAB team and Mark Boucher all the best in their conservation work going forward,” says Stuart.
