On November 5, 40 of Table Mountain Cableway’s social networking fans – who were selected via Flickr, Facebook and Twitter – plus a friend each showed up at the Lower Cable Station for a Friday evening mood setter like no other. Some travelled from as far as Swellendam to take advantage of the party, put together for fans by the cableway and Flow.

True to form, the Mother City had everyone holding their breath as the day’s weather turned from sunny and windstill to rainy and cold. Would the cableway be operational by the time the 17h30 call came? More than one nervous tweet, email and phone call was fielded at Flow’s Cape Town office and now, after the great success of this event, it’s safe for us to admit that we were equally anxious!

Table Mountain Cableway’s Sunset Special, which runs every year from November 1 to February 28 (or 29), is a hot favourite with locals. With the Sunset Special, tickets are half price after 18h00, valid on return tickets only. These tickets can only be bought from the ticket office at the Lower Cable Station from 18h00.

This year, the cableway has introduced Ride ’n Dine tickets, which up the awesome ante. These tickets include a return ticket (at half price) and a food and beverage voucher. Sunset Special Ride ’n Dine rates start from R165 per adult and R65 per child and are valid every day from 17h30 at the Lower Cable Station. From December 1, these tickets will be available online, giving visitors to Cape Town’s beloved landmark one more great reason to skip the queue and purchase online!

Regardless, our guests at the Sunset Special launch party didn’t have to stand in any queues – unless it was for another round of delectably original Fynbos Mojitos – and we were impressed with the turnout on the gloomy looking day (as well as very grateful for the refuge of the cosy Summit Lounge at the top).

Twitter was abuzz for days leading up to the event as excited prize winners mused about the weather and bragged to anyone who’d listen that they’d be kicking off their weekend with a complimentary trip to the top. They even tweeted and updated their Facebook statuses from the summit. Passionate photographers snapped away while more than one couple gazed at the views and each other, embracing the romance of the moment.

Flow would like to extend a big thank you to Table Mountain Cableway Marketing Assistant Kahshiefa Ryklief and Marketing Manager Collette van Aswegen, as well as the courteous and enthusiastic cableway staff, for a night we’re not likely to forget.
