Just 20 years old, Nomuzi Mabena was recently announced as the winner of the 2012 MTV Base VJ search. The Communications Science student from Benoni joined Flow Communications recently to upgrade her media skills.

The tall, striking beauty will soon be the face of MTV Base, a contemporary music show screened all over Africa and in several European countries.

We started the session with a brief overview of what the media landscape looks like in South Africa – who the typical journalist is, the different kinds of publications, and what makes a newsworthy story.

Flow Communications then turned up the heat by giving Nomuzi a “door-stopping” exercise. This involved Flow giving Nomuzi a scenario, allowing her a few minutes to prepare herself, then setting her loose before a pack of information-hungry journalists firing questions every second.

The last part of the media training consisted of a mock TV interview conducted by Melanie Feris, and a mock radio interview conducted by Mildred Thabane.

Throughout the five hours of intensive media training designed to prepare her for her new role as a TV personality, Nomuzi was gracious, confident and completed the course with a smile.

“It was great working with Nomuzi. She’s clever, sassy and very confident and no matter what we threw at her she took it all in her stride. She was eager to learn and we had lots of fun. This girl’s going places.”
