Flow writers, designers and programmers recently got together to produce a fresh, clean and informative site for the Anova Health Institute based in Parktown, Johannesburg.

Anova Health Institute website

Anova is an organisation that aims to improve access to public healthcare in South Africa, with particular focus on HIV and AIDS. This strategy is pursued through improving the capacity of existing systems and training staff.

The institute approached Flow Communications through a staff member who had previously worked on the redesign of the Flow-designed and -managed Journ-AIDS site, an online resource for journalists who report on HIV/AIDS.

Anova approached Flow for assistance with its site, which wasn’t serving the needs of the organisation. The brief was to create a site that showcases the work Anova does in organisations, communities and research institutions, and to profile the institute as a whole.

After three weeks of design, content auditing, uploading, programming, meetings and site planning, Anova now has a well-designed, user-friendly site that illustrates exactly which areas it focuses on and sets out the details of all their programmes.

The new site showcases Anova’s programme areas, which include:

The site displays the names of the projects and regions where these programmes are running, making it easier for NGOs and members of the public to find each project by name, programme description or region.

For those who are interested in the research and publications that Anova produces or in which it partners, the site contains a comprehensive list of publications produced by and in collaboration with the institute.

The site is also packed with latest industry and Anova news, and contains a section for upcoming and past events and a gallery of images showing the work that Anova has already done in communities and organisations around South Africa.

Flow graphic designer Ryan Levenson says he enjoyed building the Anova site.

“I used their corporate colours with textures to bring out the message of their organisation, and I love the way the site turned out. Thanks to everyone who was involved.”

Dimitri Kouvdis was the programmer for the site.

“It was an interesting experience knowing that we had to create a site that would maintain awareness of and provide information about HIV/AIDS,” he says.

Dimitri worked hand in hand with Flow’s head of programming, Richard Frank, who says it was a privilege to develop this website as a source of support around the issues of HIV and AIDS.

The site can be accessed at www.anovahealth.co.za.

Apart from the Anova site, Flow has also worked HIV/AIDS-related projects for the Sonke Gender Justice Network, Soul City and 46664.
