The Loerie Awards is an annual competition in recognition of the best work produced in the brand communication industry in Africa and the Middle East.

Flow Communications was in the fortunate position of covering the event on behalf of major client Cape Town Tourism, a proud sponsor of this year’s proceedings. Flowstars had a busy weekend attending the various events, writing blogs, taking photographs and publishing the results as they were announced.

Organisers called this year’s competition “The Biggest Event of the Year™”. Loerie Awards CEO Andrew Human said that this was a tongue-in-cheek way to ignore “a small sporting event” that took place in South Africa in 2010. The opening night of the awards at the Good Hope Centre was indeed a glitzy affair. South Africa’s top creative thinkers were recognised for their achievements and an audience of several thousand was entertained by live music, graphic displays on giant screens, as well as comedian David Kau, who was the master of ceremonies.

This year, four Grand Prix Loeries were awarded, to:

  • Boogertman + Partners Architects, Architecture and Interior Design entry for the National Stadium, “The Melting Pot”
  • Grid Worldwide Branding and Tonic Design, Communication Design Mixed-Media Campaign for Comair/British Airways, “SLOW Lounge”
  • VWV Group, Experiential Live Event entry for the World Cup Local Organising Committee, “2010 FIFA World Cup™ Closing Ceremony”
  • King James, for Allan Gray’s TV Commercial, “Legend”

The Loerie Award Festival Weekend included activities in Cape Town, Camps Bay and surrounds, although the definite highlights for Flowstars were the media lunch, the major’s party, the Battle of the Bands competition, and the legendary Long Street afterparties!

Following this year’s highly successful event it was confirmed that South Africa’s premiere brand communication awards ceremony will return to the Mother City in 2011.
