In May 2016, Flow successfully handed over a newly built e-learning programme to the Regional Tourism Organisation of Southern Africa (Retosa), the body responsible for developing tourism in Southern Africa.
The purpose of this platform? To encourage all of Retosa’s stakeholders within the Southern African Development Community region (from travel and tour operators to country ministries and tourism promotional bodies) to increase their tourism knowledge of the various countries.
Enter 2017, and Retosa approached Flow Communications to help structure a seminar to train its delegates in digital marketing.
Flow assisted in developing a programme for the seminar, in which several Flow staff members presented on their areas of expertise and passion. We were also most privileged to have one of our partners, Ad-Dynamo (Twitter’s partner in Africa), assist with the Twitter session.
The seminar comprised three days of intensive training.
Day one saw delegates complete the e-learning platform, the Southern Africa Certified Expert Programme. Later in the day, a vivid high-level landscape of the current digital marketing space in Africa was painted.
Day two saw delegates exposed to the practical intricacies of YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Day three saw sessions on:
- Websites and the latest trends
- Tourism apps
- Google and its offerings
- Vlogging and blogging
- E-marketing
- Creating content plans
The feedback from delegates was positive.

“The selection of the content was very interesting and helped me understand better the real importance of digital marketing for my company, ” said Jurema da Pedro Ferraz from Infotour in Angola.
“Very good people who know their fields inside and out; it has been very impressive and well beyond my expectations,” said Alan Roxton Wiggil from Dinokeng Junxion in South Africa.
A massive thanks goes to my Flow colleagues, Kevin Collins, Roy Barford, Tara Turkington, Elmarie Nel, Tinashe Gunda, Camilla Kohlmeyer, Melanie Feris, Gail Cameron, Nick Jackson and Kirstyn Scott, who delivered sterling presentations, with fantastic practicals.
A personal highlight included coaxing delegates to do a Mexican wave for the Facebook Live post!
