Equipped with an impressive and ever-growing knowledge of the power of social media, a few Flowstars recently made it their mission to turn Maropeng staffers into Twitter believers.
In the social media-driven world we live in, the importance of promoting a brand, and becoming an ambassador for that brand, has many benefits.
According to a recent World Wide Worx South African Social Media Landscape 2014 study, Twitter showed the highest percentage growth – a whopping 129% – among major social networks in 12 months.
And who better to promote a brand than the staff who live, eat and breathe that brand?
This was the message the Flow team spread among staff at Maropeng – the power is in their hands.
Flow’s Melanie Feris, Colin Ford, Zintle Mtyeku and Kolosa Vuso began the workshop by focusing on the significant impact social media has on businesses today.
“There were 55 000 people on Twitter in South Africa in 2010; today there are about five million. And these stats are already old because every day more and more people join the social media world,” said Feris during the presentation.
“That is about five million people to engage with and bring to Maropeng. If the Tumulus Restaurant has a new cocktail out, take a picture and tweet it – it reaches many people and it’s free publicity!”
The workshop then focused on practical aspects: setting up an account, becoming familiar with social media etiquette, and becoming Twitter-savvy.
Two hours into the dos and don’ts of social media, the once-quiet boardroom had turned into a buzz of excitement and eagerness to learn more.
The most improved Maropeng convert, Flowstars observed, was accountant Kate de Villiers (@kate_villiers), who was initially somewhat sceptical. But by the end of the workshop, she was keen and ready to keen to engage with the social media platform, albeit initially as a “voyeur”.
The most enthusiastic in the class was Maropeng education marketing executive Magel van de Venter (@Magelvdv), who provided plenty of laughs and hashtag ideas.
