An article about Tara and Tiffany Turkington talking about their latest exciting venture CollectiveCow made the cover of Succeed magazine.
CollectiveCow is an online buying site that uses the collective to negotiate major discounts for consumers. Deals range from writing lessons to restaurant and salon vouchers with up to 80% off.
According to the article “I harnessed the herd”, Tara and Tiffany have seen similar sites running in the US and wanted to bring the concept to South Africa and adapt it in such a way that it would be relevant and benefit the local market.
One of the things they encountered was the realisation that the majority of South Africans don’t have credit cards, so together with lead developers Richard and Stephen Frank, they introduced an electronic funds transfer (EFT) payment facility within weeks.
“We’ve actually pioneered a very smooth process that is quite innovative. With a credit card, we only process payment once the deal has gone through, but with EFTs we have to refund,” says Tara in the article.
Tara and Tiffany see CollectiveCow as a great opportunity to bring about change in the spending power of consumers.
“We would like to get the whole of South Africa on board. The more people that see the benefit, the better for everybody. There is a good dose of ubuntu in our thinking. We are determined to use the platform to create jobs and give back to our communities.”
