One of Flow’s fabulous traditions is buying staff cake for their birthday. For many years, birthday people have been surprised when walking into the kitchen to have their colleagues breaking into happy birthday song, doing a drum roll on the kitchen table and giving them presents.
After that, birthday girls and boys are asked to make speeches. These can range from emotional ones to the short and sweet: “Thank you, Flowstars” or “I would like to thank my cat, my dog and my colleagues for this cake,” in true Flow style.
“Cake Time”, as it known by Flowstars, is a great opportunity to chill, laugh, sing and enjoy cake and coffee in the kitchen.
Today was no different as Flow Johannesburg celebrated April birthdays for Shoni Makhari, the head of Flow PR, Bianca Bothma, one of our journalists and graphic designers Neo Male and Ryan Levenson.
But the biggest surprise of the morning was for Bianca – she got a realistic 3D Harry the Hominid cake. (One of her clients is Maropeng in the Cradle of Humankind and their mascot is Harry).
Writing Studio Manager Colin Ford said Bianca is one of the biggest fans of Harry the Hominid. He’s her world!
“We knew that getting a cake version of him made for her birthday would be something really special. Now the only question is will she have the heart to cut him up and eat him?”
Bianca says she was overwhelmed when she saw Harry in the form of a cake.
“Everyone at Flow is so thoughtful and knows how much I love Harry and Maropeng. I felt really special. Not sure if I’m going to be able to eat him, though, because I really do love him!”
The Harry cake was accompanied by chocolate and vanilla cakes for Neo, Shoni and Ryan and they were just as chuffed.
Neo said the birthday surprise was amazing. “I thought it was an April Fool’s Day joke. But the cakes were absolutely delicious.”
Ryan, who doesn’t eat cake, said, “Three cakes and a tub of ice cream [for me] was an awesome start to a Friday.”
Flow’s fabulous cakes were made by Tara and Tiffany’s PA Maria Foundanellas.
