Flow held its second blood drive for the year on Friday 13 June, and we were thrilled with the turnout. The drive went better than expected, with loads of Flowstars, clients and friends lining up to bleed with us for the South African National Blood Service (SANBS).
Sandra Galo, a registered nurse at the SANBS, said, “The drive went well and a lot of people came. There were only 12 people who were unable to donate. Our target was 22 units, and we managed to get 28 units of blood.”
These blood drives are very important and are held daily by SANBS branches across the country. The SANBS currently has only enough blood stocks for three days. Donated blood goes to children with severe anaemia, accident victims and organ-donation recipients, among others. A unit of blood, which can be separated into plasma, red blood cells and platelets, has the potential to save three lives.
“We can’t ever say we have more than enough blood,” said Sandra.
Hunadi Madime, a donor on the day, thoroughly enjoyed the experience: “It’s exhilarating; I take pleasure in knowing that my blood may help a person in need.”
