Flow Communications

Glassock & Associates, one of Flow’s fabulous clients (we built and maintain their website), are holding their second Finance Forum on Tuesday, 11 September, entitled, “Simplifying different investment vehicles”. These forums are organised by Glassock as an outreach project of the company, to help people understand their financial situations better. This forum looks set to be an engaging and insightful experience not to be missed! And it’s free! (Now that’s finance-savvy!)

The upcoming forum, which will focus on different mechanisms for investment, is open to the public and will take place at the Glassock offices at 20 Kent Road, Dunkeld West, Johannesburg. Andrew Davison, executive head of institutional business at acsis, will be presenting – certainly something to diarise if you’re interested in finance and investment.

Andrew is a qualified actuary and has been working as an asset consultant in the retirement fund industry for the past 15 years. He has also presented on a number of topics related to retirement and savings at various leading industry platforms, including the Actuarial Society of South Africa, the Pension Lawyers Association Conference and the Institute of Retirement Funds Conference.

Some of the issues and questions that Andrew’s presentation will cover include:

• What is the difference between saving and investment?
• What is the difference between compulsory and discretionary saving?
• What are the differences between the various investments one can make (e.g. costs, portfolio options, platforms)?
• The government is pushing for more passive investment portfolio options. What are these and how do they compare to active portfolio options?
• Financial literacy – what does this mean to the person on the street?
• Some of the initiatives that the government is proposing regarding incentives to save.
• Some other relevant stats that will make you think about your personal situation.
