This week I caught up with new design intern at Flow, Alex Baker and asked her a few questions about design and her favourite things.
What do you love about design?
Design requires a three-dimensional approach that consists of the artist’s interpretation of a client’s needs in order to communicate an idea to an audience. I love the push and pull between these three factors and the problem-solving needed to produce something all parties can appreciate. Plus it’s super fun.
How are you finding working at Flow?
It’s been such a long time since I worked in an environment where I felt like my personal growth was valued and encouraged by all. It’s a pleasure to be around such relaxed, vibrant people and I genuinely feel lucky to be able to learn from the best.
Some of your favourite work at Flow so far?
The majority has been for Collective Cow. It’s been a fun way of learning quick tricks of the trade and very gratifying to see my work live on the site so rapidly. Another highlight is my moonlight career in conference modelling and I’m currently waiting on a contract with SAB as the new face of the World of Beer.
Where are you from and what are are your hobbies other than designing?
While I still like to claim my Port Elizabethan heritage, I’ve been living in Johannesburg for many years and attended school around the corner from Flow’s new offices in Dunkeld. Whenever I can, I like to get out of the city and enjoy the tranquillity of the outdoors, the Drakensberg being one of my favourite destinations. These excursions give me a great excuse to get lost and take photos, which is another of my loves.
What were you doing before you came to Flow?
I’ve enjoyed a diverse work history from game ranging in KwaZulu-Natal to teaching art and history at my old school. Most recently I was an au pair for a local family with three boys who did a good job of keeping me on my toes at all times.
Who is your ultimate client?
It’s hard to think of a company or organisation I would love to work with, as there are so many individuals I admire and would love to collaborate with. Off the top of my head, meeting and working with an artist I respect such as Karel Nel or Obie Oberholzer would surely be a highlight.
