Flow’s newest intern has yet to decide whether her future lies in academia or journalism, but for now she’s getting a feel for the world of communications at our new office in Dunkeld.
The Flow opportunity came via Sarah’s aunt, who is a former schoolmate of Flow CEO Tara Turkington. Sarah’s dad also follows Tara on Twitter. “You could say I had an influential inside connection,” quips Sarah.
Sarah completed her studies at the University of Pretoria (Tuks) with honours in English literature, and particularly enjoyed the romantic poets Donne, Blake and Keats. Before joining the corporate world she worked as an au pair for a few months in Sandton, looking after “four lovely children”.
The future holds two options for Sarah: joining the world of media and communications, or lecturing in English. As an undergraduate tutor in English at Tuks, she’s tried the academic route, while her Flow tenure has given her a taste of the corporate world.
Reflecting on her work experience, Sarah says she loves the Flow vibe. “The people are friendly, the office is relaxed and there are so many different things going on,” she says. “Everyone seems so chilled and happy – they manage to work without looking like they’re working, and everything gets done.”
During the past two weeks Sarah has spent time creating a system for client Flickr albums, and blogging for the Flow website and the South African Tourism site.
Sarah’s mom, Lucille, dad, Gavin and sister, Lisa, run their newly acquired family business, the Pig & Whistle Inn in Bathurst in the Eastern Cape.
“The pub was built by the 1820 settlers, and my Dad now likes his distant connections to 1820s heritage,” says Sarah. “He jumped at the opportunity to own the oldest, continuously licensed pub in South Africa.”
