It has been a pretty exciting start to my new job as online writer/media developer here at Flow Communications in Cape Town. I’ve been able to apply a lot of the practical journalism skills and awareness of the online environment that my previous experience and studies have taught me, and put them to good use!
Many of the early pieces I’ve done for Flow have been quite lighthearted and fun, too. I have had to sneakily follow a couple around Cape Town on a City Sightseeing bus to capture the moment when Elmer Marthinus proposed to his girlfriend, Anneen Marais, on Table Mountain, and then put together a blog post for Cape Town Tourism’s website.
I have met the people and animals that can be found behind the scenes at the Two Oceans Aquarium, and spent an afternoon getting to know marine aquarist Nicholas Nicholle for a blog post I later wrote about him. They are an interesting bunch at the aquarium, and I’m hoping that we can collaborate on more behind-the-scenes blog posts in the near future.
The Etana daREDevil run, in which men don red Speedos to raise awareness about testicular and other cancers, was also rather, er, eye-opening! It is a great event for a worthy cause, and it was quite an experience to cover it. I wrote an article, shot a video and took some photos to accompany the blog.
I’ve been up to the Table Mountain cableway’s offices several times since I’ve started, for a variety of reasons. I snapped a few pictures of the Cable Card members’ breakfast one Saturday morning, and ended up getting some amazing shots of a completely cloud-covered Cape Town. And just this week I chatted to 80-year-old Briton Mike Howitt, who’d ended an eight-week, 13 000km journey across the Middle East and Africa on Table Mountain.
I’m looking forward to contributing even more to Flow’s great content output!
