When Flow project manager Roshni Nana placed a thick file on my desk accompanied by a couple of disks with the words “St Mary’s” written on the cover, I realised it was that time of the year again.

Flashbacks to the same time late last year came rushing back to mind: sleepless nights, caffeine overdose, working from 8:30am until the same time the next morning and weekends that were virtually non-existent.

The time of year had come where I had to cram everything that took place at St Mary’s School during the year – tours, sport, awards, artwork, the matric dance, charity work, school plays etc – into just 148 pages.

It really was as hectic as it sounds, but the St Mary’s staff helped to make it easy sailing for us. They were super-organised, from providing pagination for the book to supplying high-resolution pictures and artwork. The real difficulty was fitting everything that had taken place in a busy school year into one magazine!
As is often the case with such projects, it sometimes felt as though there was just too much to do and not enough time to do it in. Somehow, though, we fitted it all in – and, now that I think back on it, I realise the job really worked out well.

I must admit I enjoyed reading the Junior School learners’ creative writing pieces – they were just too cute and some were extremely funny, proving once again that kids definitely say the darndest things.

A few weeks after deadline, the printer delivered the finished product. After checking each and every page, Roshni and I finally exhaled! All our hard work, long hours and running back and forth to make sure everything was on point had paid off; the magazine looked stunning!

I hope the kids will have as much fun going through the pages as I did creating them.
