This December, the Cape Town Summer Market has had a facelift and the 11-day family market will take place in the Company’s Garden.
The City of Cape Town wanted to revitalise the Adderley Street Night Market. Adele Lucas Promotions approached Flow Communications to join them in tendering for the contract to run and promote what has now become the Cape Town Summer Market.
“After much debate and discussion about Cape Town and its broader complexities, the consortium decided to move the market so it sits in the heart of the museum district – close to the Iziko South African Museum and the South African Jewish Museum, among others,” says Flow strategist Kevin Collins.
“It’s really a peaceful and beautiful place, in the heart of the Mother City. You can even see the mountain from any point at the market – we tapped into Cape Town’s rich heritage,” continues Kevin. “The market is really the perfect mix between tourism and the local market, and we focused on vendors who would highlight the amazing crafts we have in the city.”
“The market takes place from December 14–24, and during this time we will be providing public relations support and extensive coverage via social media channels. In the meantime, we will be engaging with Cape Town residents on social media and providing all the necessary information about the market, as well as creating some hype,” says Flow Cape Town manager Roy Barford.
“This is the first time we’ve seen Pinterest register higher on a search than Facebook,” says Kevin, when asked about incorporating the new social network Pinterest in the social media strategy. “We created this aspirational board that encourages people to say ‘I can do that, I can make that’, and is in line with the craft theme that will be at the market.”
The market will open until 21h00 every day, so visitors can enjoy the long Cape Town sunsets. Entertainers have been incorporated at several points and there are beautiful places to stop and enjoy the food on offer.
Designer George Xafis, who designed the Cape Town Summer Market logo, says: “The design reflects the broad diversity of Cape Town. The colours, shapes and icons are inspired by the people and places that contribute and have contributed to the long-lasting heritage of the Mother City. Clear and open channels of communication made the design process easier and quicker to execute the overall designs.”
