Will you get involved and help them set a Guinness World Record?
In conjunction with Lead SA and Constitution Hill, Afrika Tikkun – a not-for-profit organisation that provides education, health and social services to children, youth and their families – is attempting to create the world’s longest HIV/Aids awareness ribbon by tying thousands of red shirts together. They are sounding the call to all schools, businesses and the public to donate red T-shirts to the cause.
“By attempting to make the longest HIV/Aids ribbon and getting it into the record books, we at Afrika Tikkun are trying to create a global awareness around HIV/Aids, which is taking millions of lives annually,” says Amanda Blankenfield, events manager for Afrika Tikkun. “This initiative is about bringing the number of deaths caused by HIV/Aids to zero, and the number of infections to zero.”
The Red Aids Ribbon Project was first conceived in July 2012, when schoolchildren tied more than 700 red T-shirts together. But this year a greater effort will be needed if the target of a 1.5-kilometre ribbon is to be achieved. Once the Guinness World Record is verified, the T-shirts will be distributed to individuals who need clothing via Afrika Tikkun’s centres across Gauteng and Cape Town.
Become a part of history by helping Afrika Tikkun set the world record on Saturday, 1 December (World Aids Day). T-shirts can be dropped off at The Star offices in Johannesburg, the Pretoria News offices in Tshwane and at Primedia Broadcasting’s building in Sandton.
