In March 2021, a group of South Africans who are passionate about ocean conservation formed the MPA Alliance and audaciously declared the world’s first Marine Protected Areas Day, to create awareness about these “game reserves of the sea”.
A few months later, South Africa observed MPA Day on 1 August 2021. This included a virtual live tour to four MPAs, attended by hundreds of people, and a live Twitter chat with influencers.
The pro bono MPA Day campaign reached three million-plus people on social media and garnered R5-million in media coverage. In 2022, MPA will be celebrated in nine countries.
