The Nelson Mandela Foundation was established in 1999, as Nelson Mandela stepped away from public engagements, to promote his principles and keep his memory alive.
This task is becoming increasingly difficult as the man known affectionately as Madiba slips from memory and public consciousness.
It has been 25 years since Mandela stepped away from public engagements and 10 years since his death. Many young adults have no personal memory of the global icon’s actions, nationally or globally.
The world has changed in the 25 years since Mandela stepped off the international stage, becoming markedly more polarised. While Mandela’s international image as a world statesman and peace advocate remains solid, some South Africans, especially young South Africans, question the compromises he made with apartheid-era government leaders to secure the peaceful transition to democracy for which the country is famous.
