On 28 September 2024, the Nelson Mandela Foundation hosted the 22nd Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture in Johannesburg, headlined by Nobel literature laureate Abdulrazak Gurnah. Centred on the theme “Realising Our Shared Humanity”, Gurnah, a Tanzanian novelist, drew deeply from his literary focus on the immigrant experience and social justice.

The results were exceptional and included an AVE of R8.4-million, way above the targeted R1-million (740% over target), and social media achieved 11.5-million in reach, solidly ahead of the 10-million target (15% over target).

Beyond numbers, the campaign succeeded in sparking global dialogue around shared humanity and justice, echoing Mandela’s values and securing the foundation’s position as a global thought leader. The 2024 lecture stood out as not just an event, but a meaningful global intervention – one that invited people everywhere to reflect, connect and act.
