Writing, editing and photography

The WITSReview is a quarterly publication produced by the University of Witwatersrand to keep Wits alumni in touch with the university and each other.

Wits’ Alumni Office, which publishes WITSReview, values Flow’s ability to write up in-depth interviews, bringing the personal and public aspects of a character together in a vivid profile.

The Flow writing team produces thought-provoking articles on cutting-edge research, alumni achievers and academics WITSReview.

Writing for the WITSReview means trying to capture the history and tradition of the university, as well as its exciting future.

In 2009, Flow profiled Deputy Vice-Chancellor Belinda Bozzoli as part of a package of articles on the university’s research programme (other achievers we interviewed were Prof Viness Pillay on drug delivery systems and Prof Valerie Mizrahi on TB).

For a package on journalism, we interviewed City Press Editor Ferial Haffajee and the dean of Humanities at Wits, Prof Tawana Kupe. We marked the International Year of Astronomy by writing about the work of Prof David Block and Dr Bernie Fanaroff, and we’ve covered subjects as diverse as international university rankings, the Wits Rural Facility, the global economy and Wits’ art galleries.

In 2009 we also profiled Wits Vice-Chancellor Loyiso Nongxa, who grew up in the rural Eastern Cape and went on to become the finest student in the history of the University of Fort Hare.

In previous years, Tara Turkington has profiled a range of high-profile people who are alumni or strongly associated with Wits in some way. Subjects include human rights lawyer George Bizos, Constitutional Court Deputy Chief Justice and Wits Chancellor Dikgang Moseneke, and Nobel Laureate for Literature Nadine Gordimer.

Flow also reviews non-fiction books for the magazine that have ranged in subject matter from Sara Baartman to invasive species, the Drakensberg and access to information for the magazine, and we regularly come up with the cartoon that captures the essence of the humorous “At Wits End” piece.
