46664 is Nelson Mandela’s global HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention campaign launched in 2002. The campaign asks people around the world to unite so that we can turn the tide on HIV/AIDS.
Flow writes stories for 46664 on the events that they host and the work that they do within the community, as well as articles on HIV/AIDS and the issues that surround HIV/AIDS. We also edit and upload the Sis Lebo (46664’s agony aunt) questions and answers.
In the light of the HIV/AIDS fear, writing for 46664 means having to be aufait with research and statistics in the field, which can be quite challenging.
It is also important to be aware of the sensitivity that we have to adopt – particularly in South Africa where the disease is still very stigmatised – when we interview people, write about the topic, and engage with people in any way about HIV/AIDS.
In terms of research, the majority of our knowledge is garnered from attending events where we get a feel for what the disease means at a grass roots level.
It is probably one of the most hands-off projects that we are involved in as journalists because, if people do disclose anything to us, the situation is emotionally fraught, and is often best served by adopting the role of an observer.
