Record traffic for Table Mountain Cableway: On foot and on the web

December 2011 will go down in the books as one of Table Mountain Cableway’s busiest months to date: 116 000 pairs of feet took to the summit of Cape Town’s beloved landmark. That’s pretty impressive when you consider that the cableway reported just 6 000 visitors in December 1929, the year that it was first operational. Of course, here at Flow Communications, we get most of our kicks elsewhere – on the web, that is.

We are particularly chuffed that the cableway’s website also enjoyed record visits during December. Compared to December 2010, visits were up 43%. It’s the highest number of visits the website has received to date.

We attribute this growth to a number of factors. Needless to say, the exposure gained from becoming one of the New7Wonders of Nature has done wonders not only for the cableway, but for Cape Town too, with increased interest being shown by international users, as well as South Africans.

Daily blog updates, dedicated online reputation management and a carefully structured communication strategy have helped us build a loyal following online. In turn, the cableway’s fans have spread the word for us, consistently tweeting and liking the blog posts, weather updates and sharing news with their circles. By being ready to respond to any and every query, the cableway has shown just how important great client service is in the long-term.

Speaking of which, the cableway’s Facebook fans and Twitter followers have increased exponentially over the last year. In December 2010, the cableway had roughly 1 600 fans on Facebook and 700 followers on Twitter. At the time of writing this, these accounts stand at 7 795 and 4 489 respectively.

Says Flow Cape Town Manager Roy Barford, “I’m super proud of the work Flow has done with the cableway to promote their offering through social networks and on the website – the results are showing. There’s an excellent understanding between the two organisations and I’m excited about what we can achieve
in 2012.”
