Before television and the internet, listening to the radio was an integral part of each household’s daily routine. Parents and children would gather around their radio to listen to soapies, the news or music.

Despite massive advancements in information and communication technologies, radio continues to enjoy widespread popularity and influence, though the format may have changed a little, with talk radio becoming particularly popular. On 15 May, MTN honoured a number of South African radio stalwarts by inducting them as inaugural members into the MTN Radio Hall of Fame at the MTN Radio Awards, held at Montecasino in Johannesburg.

One of the inductees was prolific travel writer, radio talk-show host, and long-time Flow associate, Kate Turkington.

Kate’s show, Believe it or Not, which airs on Sundays from 8pm to 11pm on Talk Radio 702 and Cape Talk, is South Africa’s longest-running radio show, turning 18 years old in August this year.

Talking about the award, Kate said she was delighted to have made it into the Hall of Fame: “I am really thrilled. I feel really honoured and deeply humbled by this award.”

At the gala awards dinner, Kate’s achievements were celebrated alongside those of radio icons such as John Berks, Issie Kirsh, Dan Moyane and Treasure Tshabalala. She stood out, however, as the only woman be honoured in this way. Talk Radio 702 won the overall award for Best Radio Station of the Year.

Kate frequently works with Flow – she conducts media training regularly with us, and often contributes articles to various websites we run.

She’s also Flow directors Tiffany and Tara Turkington’s mum, and they’re very proud of her!

Congratulations on your award Kate! I am one of those avid Springbok Radio listeners who was glued to my small transistor radio every evening under the blankets listening to the likes of The Creaking Door, Squad Cars, Tales of the Seven Seas, Medical File and many other wonderful programmes.

It’s so wonderful to see someone of your stature acknowledged for the important role you continue to play on radio, despite the digital world in which we now live.
