The much-anticipated Design Indaba arrived in our beautiful Mother City, and running from February 26 to 28, 2010. The venue for this year’s Indaba was the Cape Town International Convention Centre, a venue par none.
Arriving at the venue, parking became a mission not even Tom Cruise could handle, but after some nifty driving skills from Flow’s Cape Town General Manager, Bronwen d’Oliveira and I, we managed to park (somewhat illegally).
The foyer/ticket sales area was very disappointing, but that disappointment soon disappeared upon entering the expo hall.
I was truly amazed (as a designer myself) at the extraordinary talent South Africa has to offer, be it graphic, furniture, or interior design.
There was also something for everyone; you didn’t have to be a design guru from some fancy advertising agency to enjoy the expo.
The conference kicked-off on Wednesday, February 24, while the expo started on Friday, February 26, and continued through to Sunday.
The part of the expo showcasing up and coming designers was truly amazing ... a sight to behold. A technique I noticed, from stand exhibitions to designer exhibitions, was the use of illustrations, from hand-drawn to digital. Visually, it works very well.
Many of the exhibitions were also based on re-using materials, giving them a second life. Bronwen and I watched a little movie where a Cape Peninsula University of Technology student created furniture from a piece of cardboard that could be folded in numerous styles.
Another amazing part of the expo was the modernised Grolsch Bar!
The overall management of the event was truly amazing.
For those who missed out on the event there is always next year ... but what an event you did miss!
