Embracing new challenges

Mildred Thabane is a talented addition to the Flow writing team, and relishes the opportunity of being part of an exciting and dynamic organisation.

While working in the magazine industry as a junior sub, Mildred felt the need for a new challenge, and responded to an advertisement from Flow.

“I went through Flow’s website and liked what I saw,” she says. “I didn’t study journalism but I always enjoyed writing, and to be afforded the opportunity to write with no proper writing experience was the clincher for me; it really made me want to join a place that was so willing to teach me.”

Mildred’s expectations were “blown out of the water” once she arrived. She moved from working in an environment driven by monthly deadlines to facing daily deadlines.

And she’s embraced the added responsibility of working on a number of websites: “To have them handed to me, with the responsibility to shape them and make them better, is very exciting.”

Mildred finds the environment far different from her time at the monthly mag, but enjoys the vibe, which includes sitting together for lunch with colleagues and personally interacting with her bosses.

She has veered slightly from the path that her degree in publishing from the University of Pretoria suggested, but it’s a change in direction that she welcomes.

“I really enjoy working with technology – that’s the way the world is moving. I’m learning a lot here and I want to hone my writing in such a way that I can write really informative and interesting articles on different platforms for different target audiences.

“I want to learn more about project management and how to take an idea and make sure I can plan it and express it to everyone involved, so that a beautiful result is created.”

Mildred is one of my best friends. She is intelligent, hard-working and loves learning. I’m sure she is a great contribution to the agency!

All the best my good, good friend!
