Web designer in the making – John Kazembe

Flow Communications is a company that prides itself on being reliable, creative, transparent and passionate about its people. We mean it when we say “our people are our most important asset”.

John Kazembe, Flow’s gardener, is growing things other than the flowers and plants in our Joburg garden – his skills.

Mike Thiel, Flow CEO Tara Turkington’s husband, knew John through his family’s involvement in the Dominican Convent School, where he is the principal, and quickly spotted his potential. Read more…

Much like life, Clarens is what you make of it

The quaint town of Clarens huddles in a shallow Free State bowl, surrounded by sandstone cliffs painted gold every morning by the sun.

Referred to by locals as the Jewel of the Free State, Clarens is a shoppers’ delight, with legendary art and craft to be found within walking distance wherever you are in the town, along narrow lanes crowded by small shops that flank a grassy town square. Read more…

Devil’s Pique: English is more exception than rule

Devil’s Pique: English is more exception than rule

The English language is a barbarous one, known for plundering other tongues, rich for all its greed. It is precisely this that has made it so adaptable to local cultural and linguistic peculiarities. It’s also what makes the language so damnable, having more exceptions than rules.

Let me develop on some of my daily dichotomies as a sub-editor at Flow.

The Associated Press Stylebook (a sub-editor’s bible) would have me italicise all non-English words, except where they have become sufficiently anglicised. “Café” would be a case in point. Read more…

Flow welcomes Dimitri and George to the family

We’re just over half-way through the month, but June has already heralded a great deal of excitement at Flow. From the kick off of the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ to the first session of Flow School, things have certainly been busy here at 7 Douglas Street.
